I Think I Found a Mound While I Was Walking Around Downtown: The Legacy of Ohio's Ancient Mounds and Earthworks in the 21st Century
The land we now call Ohio was once home to thousands of ancient burial mounds and spectacular earthworks. Most were built in Ohio's Early and Middle Woodland Archaeological Periods or from about 500 BC to AD 500. It's a fact that significant portions of our ancient past still exists pretty much right under the noses of a general public that is often amazed to find that it's often no further than their own back yards. Ohio's rich mound building legacy still has great stories to tell if one just takes the time to listen.
Bill Pickard is a 1995 graduate of The Ohio State University with degrees in Anthropology and Art History and has worked in the Collections/Curatorial Division of the Ohio Historical Society since 1999. He has been involved in archaeology as a second career for nearly 30 years and has done extensive fieldwork on a wide variety of prehistoric and historic archaeological sites.
